Local Places
Visiting local shops can be a thrilling afternoon adventure for the numismatist who knows where to go. Places coin collectors gravitate toward include swap meets, flea markets, antique stores and estate sales. You can have a great time and get your hands on some new coins at most of these places, even if your budget is very small.
Day Trips
Plan a day trip after you have exhausted your local options. Choose a city a few hundred miles away and plan a trip focusing on all the same places as above, such as antique stores and swap meets. Consider joining a regional coin club to meet with other numismatists and swap coins.
Regional Coin Clubs
According to Coin Resources, several regional coin clubs exist, including the Indiana State Numismatic Association, the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association, the Indianapolis Coin Club and the Central Florida Coin Club.
Vacations and Historical Places
Coin collectors enjoy visits to major museums. Examples include a visit to the U.S. Mint, the Money Museum in Colorado and the National Museum of American History (NMAH) at the Smithsonian. The NMAH is of special note, because it possesses one of the largest coin collections in the world, which includes more than 1 million objects. The NMAH collection includes significant and very rare coins, such as two examples of the 1933 double eagle $20 gold piece (of three known in existence as of 2011).
