Silver bars are considered a stable investment, but must be stored correctly to maintain their value. Storing silver bars in a fire-proof box in your home or safe-deposit box in a reputable financial institution can keep them safe, but doesn't protect against tarnish. While it may seem to make sense to wrap silver bars in plastic, unless the plastic is specifically designed for that use, it's a bad idea. Plastic wrap containing polyvinyl chloride can release elements that expedite tarnishing. If you must store silver in plastic, look for plastic boxes that do not contain PVC.
