Supplies to Collect Coins

Collecting coins is as much of an investment as it is an enjoyable, rewarding hobby. Collecting old coins can also teach you about history by giving you a substantial piece of the past you can hold in your hand. To become a competent coin collector, you need a few useful supplies.
  1. Storage Box

    • The first thing you will need as a coin collector is a place to store your coins. A safe or a lock box are excellent places to store a collection, but any type of lidded chest or box will work. Your coin collection should be stored in a dry, relatively cool place like a finished basement or a closet.

    Protective Containers

    • You can put common coins in jars or small boxes, but you will want to store more valuable coins in some type of protector. Plastic and cardboard protectors that can easily protect your coins and show them off at the same time can be bought at coin shops. Some cardboard protectors need to be stapled shut, so you may need a stapler as well.

    Coin Guides

    • A good coin price guide will help you price your collection and tell you the basics of coin collecting -- coin grading, coin histories and minting information. These guides can be bought at most bookstores as well as coin shops.
