How to Buy Coins on Craigslist

Both coin collectors and sellers can benefit from Craigslist, the popular classified ad-style website. Craigslist provides a free way for sellers to advertise merchandise, while buyers can browse the classifieds every day until they find a desirable coin. As with any type of purchase from a classified ad, you must take precautions to avoid scams. When you're prepared, a coin purchase on Craigslist can be an exciting, hassle-free experience.

  Open your favorite Web browser and go to Craigslist.org. Choose the nearest city to your location from the chart on the main page.

  Click on the "Collectibles" link under the "For Sale" menu.

  Submit a search for "coins" using the search bar at the top of the "Collectibles" page. If searching for an exact type of coin, submit a search for what you're seeking. Browse through the search results and click on any that sound desirable.

  Contact the seller for each ad. If the ads do not have a personal email address or phone number, send an email message to the address next to "Reply to" at the top left of the ad. Ask the seller about the coins and whether he has a certificate of authenticity if the coins are rare or have a high value. Also, ask the seller to email photos of the coins to confirm he has them in his possession.

  Set up a time and location--in a safe, public place--to meet the seller if you agree upon a transaction. Pay the seller after you see and handle the coins.
