Things You'll Need
Instructions
Check the language on the coin; some may be English, Latin, French, Spanish or other languages. Knowing what languages are used in which countries will help but using a reference is your best bet.
Look at the numbers on the coin. If you can read them it will make your research much easier. If they are hard to read or you don't recognize them it could help to look at other photos of coins to see if there is a resemblance.
Read the dates on the coin. If you can't read them you may need to check a conversion chart.
Identify the color and type of metal of the coin. Silver and gold are easy; and red or brown can be copper, bronze or brass. Brass can be a little more yellow and lighter. It also tarnishes more easily. Some may even be platinum or palladium. If the coin is magnetized, it could be made of steel; however, it may be plated with another metal. Weighing the coin can also help identify the metal.
Check for a photo of a person on the coin. If there is one, it may be the leader of the country or a famous person. This will help with its country of origin.
Measure the coin with a ruler to figure out its diameter and thickness; most use millimeters to do this.
Check out how the coin is designed. Look for national symbols like a coat of arms or native flowers and plants.
