How to Treat Leather Prestige Proof Set Covers

A leather proof set cover is a small leather case for a coin collection. A proof set is a collection of coins from a particular year sold by the U.S. Mint. Proofs are available for nearly every year that the United States has produced money, and some of the more expensive sets have leather covers on the containers that hold the coins. Prestige is manufacturer of leather proof set covers. Treating this leather is a surprisingly simple process and involves only a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a soft cloth with warm water. Wring out most of the water until the cloth is damp but not dripping. Remove the coin case from the leather proof set. Wipe the surface of the leather set cover with the damp cloth to begin removing dirt and oil from the surface of the cover.

    • 2

Continue to wipe the leather cover with a damp rag until the rag comes away clean. Once the damp rag wipes clean, dab a few drops of mild face soap on the rag. Gently wash the cover with the soapy rag until it comes away clean. Rinse the cover with a clean, damp rag to remove all traces of soap. Allow the leather to dry for about two hours.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of jojoba oil onto a soft cloth. Work the oil into the leather cover in circular motions so the leather will absorb the oil more effectively. Continue to rub oil into the leather until no more oil will absorb. Allow the leather to sit for 24 hours.

    • 4

Wipe away any excess oil. If there is no oil and the leather feels dry, repeat the oiling process until the leather remains soft and supple after sitting overnight.

    • 5

Rub a small amount of leather protector into the leather set cover. Allow the cover to sit for about one hour. Reinsert the coin case inside the proof cover.
