How to Collect Copper Coins

Used for low denominations since antiquity, copper coins represent an appealing collectible for those without deep pockets. While far less rare than some silver and gold coins, they can be just as interesting from a numismatic point of view.

Instructions

    • 1

Scout around yard sales for old cookie tins full of loose change, sometimes mixed in with buttons and badges.

    • 2

Check out general auctions in your area. They will usually have coins--even copper ones--in a cabinet under the eye of the porter. Many collectors enjoy the fun of taking pot luck in this way.

    • 3

Locate local coin stores. These should be the first port of call if you choose to focus on a narrow collecting range, such as the U.S. one cent, but expect to pay the full catalog guide price. Even if you don't find what you want, a friendly dealer can often be a source of invaluable advice and contacts.

    • 4

Browse online auction sites both for bargains and specific coins. If hunting for copper coins from a particular country, go to the subcategory for that country, from where you can narrow the search-field to the appropriate denomination.
