How to Find the Selling Price of a Coin Collection

If you have a coin collection and are interested in finding the current value of your holdings, there is a specific process that you must follow to find the correct value. Coin collections, depending on the content of the collection, can be either extremely valuable or nearly worthless. The general rule is the older and rarer the coin, the more value it has. Limited runs of coins are especially valuable if they are difficult to find in today's market. The same goes for coins with certain minting errors.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the "U.S. Coin Red Book" if your collection consists of U.S. coins . The "U.S. Coin Red Book" contains the most recent values for some of the rarest coins in the world. The book is published every year, so be sure to purchase the most up-to-date version available at your local bookstore. If your local bookstore does not have it, you can find it online through various retailers.

    • 2

Purchase "The Standard Catalog of World Coins" by Krause and Mishler if your collection consists of coins from outside of the United States. This publication is made up of a series of volumes and contains the values of many different coins from around the world. As with the "U.S Coin Red Book," you can purchase a copy from either a local bookstore or through various online retailers.

    • 3

Compile a list of all of the coins that comprise your collection. Be sure to mark the type of coin, the year it was minted and the approximate condition of the coin. Coins in bad condition are generally worth less than those in perfect condition.

    • 4

Use the "U.S. Coin Red Book" and/or "The Standard Catalog of World Coins" to look up each coin and note the value that is associated with it in its present condition. Once you have all of the values, use a calculator or paper and pencil to add them together to generate the total value of the collection.
