Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine the value of your coins before cleaning. Very old coins may be worth more if you do not wash or tamper with them, so buy a pricing guide or take them to a dealer to have them appraised.
Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring any dirt or oil to the coins.
Run each coin under hot water for a couple minutes on each side.
Fill a container with two cups of warm water and add a squirt of mild dish-washing detergent.
Soak coins in the solution for at least a few hours. For the best results, you may soak coins for up to two weeks.
Remove coins from the solution and run under hot water once again.
Wet a toothbrush with hot water and gently scrub the coin to dislodge any remaining buildup.
Fill a container with distilled water and swirl the coin around in the container for a final rinse.
Pat coins dry and allow them to air dry on a clean cotton towel.
