How to Wash Coins

If you collect coins, it is likely that you have several coins that are dirty or tarnished. It is also likely that you will have a desire to wash and scrub them, revealing the bright and shiny metal underneath. Instructions

    • 1

Determine the value of your coins before cleaning. Very old coins may be worth more if you do not wash or tamper with them, so buy a pricing guide or take them to a dealer to have them appraised.

    • 2

Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring any dirt or oil to the coins.

    • 3

Run each coin under hot water for a couple minutes on each side.

    • 4

Fill a container with two cups of warm water and add a squirt of mild dish-washing detergent.

    • 5

Soak coins in the solution for at least a few hours. For the best results, you may soak coins for up to two weeks.

    • 6

Remove coins from the solution and run under hot water once again.

    • 7

Wet a toothbrush with hot water and gently scrub the coin to dislodge any remaining buildup.

    • 8

Fill a container with distilled water and swirl the coin around in the container for a final rinse.

    • 9

Pat coins dry and allow them to air dry on a clean cotton towel.
