How to Complete a State Quarters Collection

The United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program began in 1999 to honor each state in the order in which it ratified the U.S. Constitution or was admitted to the Union. The program lasted 10 years, with each quarter being produced for 10 weeks, never to be produced again. State designs are on the "tails" side, while George Washington still graces the "heads." To complete a state quarters collection, all you need is a little patience.

  Print or write down a list of all 50 states. You will want this so you can check off each state as you find the quarter. Carry the list with you. Even if you have a book for keeping your quarters, a list is good to keep on hand in case you are out and come across a quarter you think you may be missing.

  Gather the quarters you already have. Look for any state quarters your collection is missing.

  Study your change. Every time you receive change, search for quarters you're missing. If you find a coin you're missing, put it in a safe place --- a pocket or a separate part of your purse --- to make sure you don't lose it or spend it.

  Ask friends and family to keep track of their quarters. Ask them to save any state quarters for you. Be prepared to hand over a regular quarter to replace the one they give you.
