How to Grade a Jefferson Nickel

Jefferson nickels, still used as currency today, are collected by many hobbyists due to a variety in minting locations. Though not as valuable as other coins, the Jefferson nickel can be graded on the same 70-point scale based on level of wear. Determining the grade of the coin requires attention to detail and research into the coin's origins.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where and when the coin was minted by searching the front of the coin. Write down the date and the capital letter beside it. Search for an online coin minting guide to determine if the date and letter indicate a rare mint.

    • 2

Look at the various points of embossing on the coin to determine the level of wear. Check the ridges around the edge of the coin for any grit or other damage.

    • 3

Review the coin grading guide linked in the Resources section to determine the best grade for the coin. Bring it to a specialist for a second opinion and confirmation on the grade.
