Size and Weight
The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the most highly respected makers of gold coins and bullion in the world, with a reputation for high-quality metallurgy. One of its gold bullion products is the kilo bar, which is measured using the metric system. Kilo is short for kilogram, which is equal to 1,000 grams. In the U.S. customary system of weights, that's about 2.2 pounds, but more importantly, one kilo equals 32.15 troy ounces. Gold is priced on international markets in troy ounces.
Distinctive Marks
On the face of the bar is the RCM hallmark, which features a stylized maple leaf in a circle, along with the English words "Royal Canadian Mint" and the French "Monnaie Royale Canadienne." The words ONE KILO are also stamped on the bar, as are a serial number and the bar's purity -- 999.9. The purity number means that out of 10,000 parts, 9,999 are the element gold; thus the bar is 99.99 percent gold.
Availability
Though the RCM manufactures them, the mint doesn't sell one-kilo gold bars directly to the public. They are widely available from coin and bullion dealers, though, and are popular because they tend to sell for slightly less than a comparable weight of gold bullion coins. Other manufacturers also make kilo gold bars, including PAMP Suisse of Switzerland, but those bars carry different hallmarks and thus are easy to distinguish from RCM gold kilo bars.
