What Is a Krugerrand?
Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand is the most abundant gold bullion coin in the world. It has always been minted as currency rather than as a commemorative. The coin contains exactly 1 ounce of pure gold, with additives for a more durable alloy.
Common Gold Buying Practices
The international spot market for gold is almost always open. At any given time "bid" and "ask" prices exist for an ounce of gold. You should expect to receive the "bid" price when selling a Krugerrand to a pawn, coin or jewelry shop. These shops may be difficult to find outside of San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose and Fresno.
Alternative Practices
The Internet offers alternatives if you're looking to get a slight premium for your Krugerrand or do not have easy access to a retail bullion dealer. Online classified ads such as Craigslist and auction sites such as eBay allow you access to collectors and investors who may be willing to pay more for your gold.
