1990 Walking Liberty Dollar Specs

The Walking Liberty Silver Dollar--minted in 1990 and named for the Walking Liberty on the front of the coin--was based on the half-dollar design created by Adolph A. Weinman, which was featured on all half dollars minted in the United States from 1916 to 1947. The 1990 version represents one silver dollar in a set commencing with the 1986 silver dollar, all minted according to strict specifications.
  1. Heads

    • On the side of the coin normally designated "heads" in a coin toss, the mint has inscribed the Weinman Walking Liberty design, his initials on the hem of her gown, with the word "Liberty" across the top. Looking at the bottom finds the year the coin was minted, in this case 1990, and to the right of Lady Liberty are the words "In God We Trust."

    Tails

    • On the "tails" side of the coin the United States Mint places the American Eagle design of John M. Mercanti, with the eagle holding arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. A look at the top of the side reveals "United States of America," while across the bottom are the words "1 oz fine silver-one dollar." The final inscription details the phrase "E Pluribus Unum."

    Content

    • Consisting of 99.93 percent silver (the rest copper), with a weight of 1 troy ounce (31.01 grams), the silver eagle measures 1.598 inches diameter with a thickness of 0.117 inches and an edge described as reeded.
