How to Store Silver Coins

Silver coins may be purchased as a collector's item, an investment or both. Whichever your purpose for owning these coins, you must store them properly to keep them safe from theft and corrosion. Silver coins will tarnish quickly if you don't store them properly. Coin-collector supply stores and other retailers carry everything you need to store silver coins properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Place each coin individually in a coin packet. These are paper or plastic sleeves specifically created for storing valuable coins.

    • 2

Place the packaged coins in a coin storage box with a lid. Suppliers offer different sizes and varieties. Some boxes contain an anti-corrosion material and will help prevent tarnish. If you choose instead a standard cardboard or plastic box, add a silica gel packet to keep humidity levels down around the coins.

    • 3

Place the lid on the box and place the box in a waterproof and fireproof safe, as recommended by Silver Coin Investor. Keep this safe in an out-of-the-way area, such as the back of a closet.

    • 4

Check the coins for tarnish about once a month. If they seem to easily tarnish, clean them with a silver cleaning cloth and replace in new packets and a new box. Add extra silica dessicant or invest in a box lined with anti-corrosion material.
