How to Purchase a MS61 Lincoln 1909-S VDB Coin

The 1909-S VDB (the designer's initials) one-cent piece is a very rare coin. Less than 500,000 1909-S VDB Lincoln cents were minted, so be prepared to spend more than $1,000 for a coin in MS61 condition.
  1. Coin Stores

    • Coin stores are the best places to buy old coins, but because of the rarity of a 1909-S VDB in mint condition, it is unlikely most stores would carry this coin. It is, however, worth your time to see if any nearby coin stores have any mint condition 1909-S VDB cents in stock (or if the dealer can help you find one for sell).

    Internet

    • Old coins are often sold via the Internet, and this might be your best bet to come across a 1909-S VDB one-cent piece. Searching through websites designed specifically to sell coins is the best way to find legitimate coins online, but sites such as eBay can also be useful (especially when dealing with very rare coins). Do not buy a coin that has not been graded by a professional grading service such as the PCGS or the NGC.

    Auction

    • Keep an eye on auctions, both local and distant. Rare coins often come to auction, and by monitoring coin auctions (through websites like CoinsAtAuction.com) you greatly increase your chances of coming across a MS61 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent. Many auctions allow you to place silent bids via telephone or Internet if you can't be physically present at the auction.
