How Do I Find Out the Value of My Coin Collection?

Whether you want to sell your coin collection or you are simply curious as to what your collection is worth, you will need to learn quite a bit about numismatics (coin collecting) before making an accurate appraisal.
  1. Price Guide

    • Buy a quality up-to-date price guide for the type of coins in your collection. Good coin guides (like the Blackbook guides) are at both coin and book stores. A price guide should tell you how to grade coins in addition to telling you what your coins are worth.

    Learn How to Grade Coins

    • You will need to have some idea of how to grade your coins in order to come up with a reasonable estimate of your coins. Grades range from about good to uncirculated. Several online coin grading resources exist to help you through the complicated process of grading coins if the info in your price guide is not enough.

    Take Inventory

    • Take an inventory of all of your coins. Computer programs like Microsoft Excel make keeping a list of your coins simpler than ever. Put approximate grades on all of your coins in order to price them later.

    Pricing Your Coins

    • Look up the value of all of your coins in your price guide. Mark them on your inventory sheet and then add the values up to find the total value of your coins. Remember, however, that this is just an estimate as to the value of your coins, the actual price you will get for them may (and probably will) vary. Going to auctions and checking online auctions sites like eBay may help you came up with a current market value estimate.
