What is a Coin Collector's Best Way to Fix Tarnished & Grimy Coins?

Before cleaning a collectible coin, it is important to take into consideration the value of the coin. If a coin is extremely valuable, or the value is unknown, cleaning the coin should be avoided at all cost as it could decrease the value of the coin. But, if the coin needs to be cleaned (for use in jewelry or to clean it of possible disease), it should be done in the gentlest manner possible. Abrasive cleaners, including most commercial coin cleaners, should not be used to remove tarnish or grime from a coin.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning Tarnish and Grime

    • 1

The coins should be handled by the edges, so you don't leave any fingerprints on the coin.

    • 2

Run the coins under water with some pressure for about a minute.

    • 3

Soak the coins in water for anywhere between a few hours to a week. This should be done until deposits disappear. Gold coins can be soaked in soapy water. Coins of different metals should not be soaked together. Bronze, silver, copper and nickel coins can be soaked in regular olive oil.

    • 4

Tough tarnish and grime can be removed by then soaking the coins in white vinegar or lemon juice for a few minutes.

    • 5

Wash the coins in denatured alcohol, then rinse with water.

    • 6

Lightly brush off any remaining dirt with a soft toothbrush and dish soap.

    • 7

Pat the coins dry with a lint-free cloth.
