The Best Way to Clean Gold Coins

If you have gold coins that need to be cleaned, do it properly so you don’t damage the coin. Although most coin collectors recommend not cleaning gold coins at all, sometimes they are just so dirty and stained that they must be cleaned. Cleaning gold coins requires the right methods so the coin is not altered from its original form. The best way to clean gold coins is with soap and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the dirty gold coins in a saucepan and fill it three-quarters full with water. Add a few drops of mild dish soap.

    • 2

Put the pan on the stove and turn the heat on medium-high to bring the water to a boil. Let the coins boil in the water for as long as it takes to get them clean. The exact time will vary depending on how dirty the coins are; however, make sure you do not let all of the water boil down or the coins will turn black.

    • 3

Remove the pan from the heat once the dirt and grime has boiled off of them. Let them sit in the pan for a few hours until the water cools to room temperature.

    • 4

Remove the coins from the pan. Dab the coins dry with a soft rag. Do not rub them dry or your risk scratching the coins.
