Things You'll Need
Instructions
Go to Google maps, type your address in the search bar to see a map of your neighborhood. Click on "Show search options." Then replace your address with the word "elementary" or "park," and you will see where the closest schools and parks are. Write down the ones you want to metal detect, or print out a map to take with you.
Turn on your metal detector to the jewelry or all-metal setting for playground hunting. These settings will find both coins and gold jewelry. You will only be digging 4 to 6 inches deep, which is the depth of the wood chip or gravel surface, so keep your sensitivity at an average setting so you don&'t get false signals from having the detector maxed out.
Hunt from one end of the wood chip or gravel-covered play area to the other. Make a line with your foot in the wood chips at the edge of your metal detector&'s swing area so you know where to cover on your return pass.
Lower the sensitivity level on your detector when you get near the metal posts of the playground equipment so you can get closer, since this is where most coins and jewelry are lost. Listen closely for tone changes around the metal posts.
Clean up any metal pieces you come across while detecting and dispose of them. This makes the playground safer and makes it easier for you to hunt again next time. Always abide by the Treasure Hunter&'s Code of Ethics.
