Identifying an American Buffalo 1 Oz Gold Coin

The American Buffalo 24-karat 1 oz. bullion gold coin was first minted in 2006. Three smaller American Buffalo gold coins (half ounce, quarter ounce and 10th ounce) were also minted. These coins were sold individually and as a set. The American Buffalo gold coins are only minted for collectors and not for circulation. The image on the front and back of the coin was taken from the buffalo nickel minted between 1913 and 1938.

Instructions

Examine the faces of the coin. An American Buffalo 1 oz. gold coin is golden in color. On the front, a Native American is portrayed looking to the right. A picture of a buffalo adorns the back. The words United States of America are on the top of the back (buffalo side) of the coin.

Look at the bottom of the back of the coin. Beneath the buffalo is the denomination of the coin, $50, and beneath that it says "1 oz. 9999 fine gold."

    • 3

Find the date at the bottom left of the front of the coin. As of 2010, American Buffalo 1 oz. gold coins have only been minted in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. If the coin has a date before 2006, or no date at all, it is a counterfeit. Dates also have a lot to do with the numismatic value of the coin, as eventually, for whatever reason, one specific year may become more valuable than the rest.
