Instructions

    • 1
Proof-finish silver coins should not be touched or cleaned.

Determine the type of silver coin you have. Proof finishes and rare coins should not be touched or cleaned. Circulating coins and bullion coins can be cleaned for a brighter finish.

    • 2
Silver bullion and circulating coins can be safely cleaned.

Rinse the coin with water. Use distilled water if possible. This will remove water-soluble dust and dirt. Dry the coin by patting (not rubbing) gently with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. Rubbing or brushing the coin will cause fine hairline scratches that will reduce the value of collectible coins.

    • 3

Rinse with alcohol. Alcohol will remove oils and other types of dirt that are not soluble in water. Dry as in Step 2, being careful not to rub the coin.

    • 4

Acid wash the coin. Use undiluted lemon juice or vinegar to dip the coin. Commercial coin "dips" are also available. Follow instructions for commercial coin dips. Leave the coin in the bath only until the tarnish is removed and no longer--the acid will eat away the silver. Some suggest leaving heavily tarnished coins in an acid bath overnight, but this is risky and should be avoided.

Rinse the coin in baking soda solution. Make a baking soda solution by placing about a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of distilled water. Excess baking soda will not harm the coin. Stir for a few seconds. Dip the coin for a minute or two. Finish by rinsing or dipping the coin in distilled water and dry as in Step 2.
