Time Frame
Silver Jefferson nickels were produced from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II. The mint replaced the nickel content with silver to free up more nickel metal for the production of military supplies.
Identification
Silver nickels can be distinguished from other nickels by the appearance of a large mint mark just above the dome of Monticello on the reverse side. Silver nickels also have a slight color variation from ordinary nickels.
Significance
Coin collectors seek uncirculated silver war nickels because most nickels, whether made from silver or not, have minimal value in circulated condition.
Fun Fact
Silver nickels minted in Philadelphia were the first coins to feature the "P" mint mark. This was not standard practice on coins produced before 1979.
Value
Silver Jefferson nickels have a minimum value of 25 to 50 cents because of the silver content in the coin. High-grade circulated or uncirculated silver nickels are worth up to $5. (Prices as of 2009.)
