How Much Is a 1899 Barber Dime Worth?

The Barber dime is a popular coin for collectors because it is a design that spans the 19th and 20th centuries. The 1899 Barber dime has a variety of values, based on the condition of the coin and the mint where it was produced.
  1. Time Frame

    • Barber dimes were produced from 1892 to 1916. The Barber design was replaced by the Liberty head dime design.

    Identification

    • The 1899 Barber dime was produced in Philadelphia, San Fransisco and New Orleans. Coins produced in the San Fransisco and New Orleans mints are worth slightly more than those from Philadelphia, no matter what condition.

    Significance

    • The Barber dime was designed by the U.S. Mint's head engraver, Charles Barber. The design met the criteria for a good strike on a single run through the coin press.

    Fun Fact

    • Most of Barber dimes produced during the run of the design were sharply struck. The exception to this is some dimes struck at the New Orleans mint were weaker. These are hard to find in fine circulated condition.

    Value

    • The value of an 1899 Barber dime is based on two factors: the mint mark and the condition. Barber dimes without mint marks range from $1 to $50, depending on condition. Those with an "O" or "S" mint mark are worth up to $250 in uncirculated condition. (Prices as of 2009.)
