Value of Liberty Head Dollars

Liberty head dollars can vary in value greatly depending on the year they were minted, the condition of the coin and the rarity of the issue. All Liberty head dollars coined by the U.S. Mint are primarily made of silver.
  1. Types

    • The design of the Liberty head dollar changed over the years. The existing varieties are known as Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Liberty Seated, Trade Dollars, Morgan and Peace.

    Conditions

    • A coin that is free from much wear and contact marks can be considered to be uncirculated. Well-worn coins grade in good, fair and very fine conditions.

    Values

    • The early 1794 Flowing Hair Liberty dollars can be worth $50,000 even in merely good condition and more than $500,000 in uncirculated condition as of 2010. More recent coins such as the Morgan and Peace dollars issued from 1878 to 1921 and 1921 to 1935 tend to be valued at $20 to $50 in very fine conditions and $50 to $100 in uncirculated condition as of 2010.

    • Most Liberty head dollars are made up of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.

    Size

    • Liberty head dollars tend to be 38 mm in diameter and weigh around 25 grams.
