How to Recover Gold from Gold Leaf

Gold leaf is used for gilding frames and other objects. Its fragility makes it difficult to work with, but with care, the gold can be recovered. Gold leaf is nearly pure gold that is beaten into extremely thin sheets. Typically 22-karat yellow gold is used for leaf, which is approximately 92 percent pure gold.

Instructions

Use tweezers to place gold leaf in a sealing plastic bag. Gold leaf is very thin and fragile, so it is necessary to put it into a secure bag so it does not blow away. Use tweezers so the gold leaf will not melt in your fingers.

    • 2

Use tweezers to remove the gold leaf left on the transfer paper. One of the key elements to gold leaf application is transfer paper. Often gold leaf can be left on the paper. Scraps of gold leaf on transfer tissue can be collected as well, using tweezers.

    • 3

Use a scale to weigh the bag containing the gold leaf. Gold leaf is nearly impossible to weigh on its own, as it is so fragile that it will likely blow away. Place an empty bag on the scale, and note its weight; subtract that from the weight of the bag of gold. Note the weight of the gold on the bag in permanent marker for your records, as this will be required should you ever elect to sell it.
