Composition
Most dollars are composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. Silver coins such as these tend to retain their shine and mint luster more than coins composed primarily of other metals.
Size
Silver dollars tend to be about 38mm in diameter.
Weight
Silver dollars weigh about 27 grams, making them much heavier than other coins struck by the U.S. Mint.
Coinage
Silver dollars have been minted in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans and Carson City. New Orleans and Carson City no longer mint coins.
Grades
Numismatists grade silver dollars between the common marks of good (G-4) and uncirculated (MS-60). Good coins are fairly well worn and most features are not easily distinguishable. Uncirculated coins have few blemishes and no wear.
