How to Collect Presidential Dollars

The United States Mint has a series of $1 coins that feature the images of past presidents. Starting in 2007, the Mint released coins with the pictures of the first four presidents in the order that they served. As with collecting any type of coin, you should take care to start with uncirculated coins and to carefully preserve the condition of the coin. This ensures that your collection will be worth more than face value in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Order Presidential Dollars direct from the U.S. Mint. For slightly more than face value, the U.S. Mint will ship you one of each of the current year's four presidents in a cardboard display case. Another option is to purchase "circulating $1 coin direct ship rolls." These are coins that are meant for circulation, but as they are coming directly from the Mint, they have not yet been in circulation.

Use gloves when handling your coins. Part of the proper preservation of collectible coins is to never touch them with your fingers, which could cause the coins to become dirty. Use rubber gloves when handling the coins.

    • 3

Collect at least one coin featuring each president. If you've purchased the rolls from the Mint, you'll have to go through the coins to be sure that you have one or more of each president. Any coins that you don't plan on collecting, you can spend as you would paper dollars.

    • 4

Store the coins properly. You can do this in cardboard envelopes that are designed specifically for coin collecting. If you want to display your collection, purchase a special coin collecting box.

    • 5

Purchase new coins every year. Because not all of the coins have been released, you'll need to repeat this process every year until you have a full set.
