How to Display Coins in a Display Box

The most essential skill for any avid coin collector, or numismatist, is the skill of properly storing or displaying the collection. Instructions

  1. Cleaning and Preparing Coins for Display

    • 1

Put on the lint-free cotton gloves and remove your coins carefully, one at a time, from whatever container you have been keeping them in and place them in rows on the towel. If some coins are in permanently sealed, hard plastic containers (called slabs), then set those aside to be displayed separately.

    • 2

Use the artist's brush to gently brush away any dirt or dust that has accumulated on the surface of the coin. If any coins have developed a film from storage or are stained in any other way, use the cotton swab and the distilled water or olive oil to gently rub it away.

    • 3

Identify each coin, using the magnifying glass when necessary to verify dates. Write a complete description of the coin, including the date, type and origin, on your labels.

    Arranging and Displaying Coins

    • 4

Decide how you wish to display your coins. You can arrange them according to age, place of origin, type of coin or however you desire. Arrange them on the towel before placing them in the box.

    • 5

Carefully place each coin in its designated area of the display box. Move them one at a time. If you have two of the same coin, you may want to place one heads up and one tails up, so both sides can be seen at the same time.

    • 6

Move the labels carefully to the appropriate areas with the tweezers to avoid touching the coins. Use display pins or a stapler to affix the label above or below each coin. If your box is designed with indentations for labels, then these pins are not necessary.

    • 7

Place a small amount of desiccant under the display box or in a corner. Desiccant is a material that removes moisture from the box and can be purchased at hobby or numismatist shops.
