How to Tone Silver Coins

Coin collectors vary drastically; some want coins that look like they just came out of the mint press and some want them to look old and tarnished. To tone a silver coin means to make it look worn and old. You can do this over a long period of time by just leaving your silver coin outside to experience the elements, or you can complete this process in less than a month artificially.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the silver coin you want to tone in your pocket for about a week. Handle it several times a day to get your skin's oils on all parts of the coin.

    • 2

Pour about an ounce of powdered sulfur or cigarette ashes into an envelope.

    • 3

Set the coin in the envelope and seal the envelope. Place the sealed envelope in a sunny area.

    • 4

Handle the envelope daily and massage the coin around in the sulfur powder.

    • 5

Take the coin out of the envelope after a month.
