How to Convert Troy Ounces to Pounds

A troy ounce, named from the city Troyes in France, is a little different than the Avoirdupois ounce commonly used today. You will most likely hear about troy ounces when shopping for precious metals or gems, like in a jewelry store. Troy ounces can be easily converted to an Avoirdupois pound with a simple equation.

  Determine the number of troy ounces you would like to convert. Often, if you are trying to convert from gems or metals that you already own, you would know this number from your purchase. If you are unsure, take your to gem or metal to a local expert in the field to have it weighed.

  Multiply the number of troy ounces by 0.0685 to obtain the weight in Avoirdupois pounds. For example, if you want to convert 26 troy ounces, multiply 26 by 0.0685 to get 1.781 Avoirdupois pounds (26 x 0.0685 = 1.781).

  If, for some reason, you need to reverse the process, the equation is simple. Take the number of Avoirdupois pounds and multiply it by 14.583.
  
  For example, if you have 3 Avoirdupois pounds to convert, multiply 3 by 14.583 to get 43.789 Troy ounces (3 x 14.583 = 43.789).
