How to Value a Coin Collection

Coin collecting can be interesting and engaging to those who desire history and detail within their hobby. Coins have been around for centuries, and carry images of past kings and queens, noble leaders and landmarks that are well-known. Among the qualities coin collectors consider when valuing their items are condition, bullion strength and rarity of the coin.

Determine the name, year and grade for your coin. For example, you may have a standing liberty quarter dollar, from the year 1919. It is important to recognize whether your coin has the initial markings, or if some have rubbed off. This pertains to the grade level of your coin. If the date is clear and the details of the woman are clear, then your coin will have greater value. Make a list of all your coins, noting their possible grade level.

Review your coins with the pictures and information provided from books, such as the Guidebook to United States Coins. This book is commonly referred to as "The Red" book, because of it's red cover. Verify everything from the name, year, designer, grade and edition of the coin you have.

Check for valuable errors. The double die obverse is a well known "mistake" that leads to an increase in value. The head side of the coin will have what appears to be a double stamped date and lettering above the head. Other errors are planchets, a blank or partially blank coin; broadstrikes, when a coin is struck larger than normal; and unplated zinc pennies made after 1982.

Cross reference your list to a website such as mycoincollecting.com. If your coins are from different countries, value them at worldcoingallery.com. Write the value beside each coin and double check the values with two different sites for credibility. The market value is based on supply and demand, as well as the median price for the specific coin.
