How to Find a Coin Exchange in Chicago

The Chicago area has many locations where you can exchange coins for paper money, or trade for other coins or goods. Individuals take their rare or valuable coins to a coin exchange and exchange them with a dealer, who assesses the value of the coins. Then, you can trade your coins for other coins you want to collect, get other collectors' items or receive cash.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for several coin exchanges in the Chicago area. Several are in northern Chicago, near Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park. Looking in the Yellow Pages can provide you exact addresses, or by asking individuals who live in those neighborhoods. You can also do an Internet search for coin dealers in your area (see Resources).

    • 2

Make a list of the types of coins you are looking to exchange. Make a note of the year, make, and any other significant details about the coin on a separate list.

    • 3

Make a list of current values on the coins you are looking to exchange. Make a note of this on a separate list. You can look up the current value of your coins in the online database of coins (See Resources).

    • 4

When researching coin dealers, call each to detail what you have and what you are looking to exchange. Make an appointment over the phone with them to schedule a time to take your coins in.

Shop around. Don't sell, exchange or trade your coins until getting several estimates from other dealers. Many exchanges will have different prices based on their inventory. If they have very few, or none of the coins you are looking to exchange, they might offer you a better price. However, if they have a lot of the coins you are looking to exchange, they'll likely offer you less money.
