Tools That You Will Need for Metal Detecting Coins

Searching for coins with a metal detector can be a profitable hobby. If you can get permission to detect around older properties, you may even find silver or gold coins. Several accessories will be essential for your hunt, and there are others that you may find useful as you listen to the detector's beeps.
  1. Digger

    • You will need a hand trowel to dig for deeper coins and a flathead screwdriver to dig up shallow objects. When digging, make a big circle around the object in the ground so that you can pull all the dirt out at once. This helps keep the grass roots attached to the soil and prevents the grass from dying.

    Pouch

    • A pouch with a belt loop is quite useful for holding items you discover. Try to find one with multiple sections so you can separate coins, garbage and other objects. If you dig throw-away objects such as aluminum cans or pop tops, do not put them back in the ground. Instead, stick them in the garbage section of your pouch and toss them in the trash after your hunt.

    Ground Cloth

    • Find an old cloth or even a sturdy napkin for the purpose of dumping your dirt onto it. Once you dig up a plug of dirt, work some loose with your finger onto the cloth to search for your coin. This is much easier than trying to find the coin in the grass. White is the best color for the cloth, as it provides a better background when you are seeking the coin.

    Pinpointer

    • These objects are rods about a foot long that will beep when they are near metal. Pinpointers are useful for determining if the coin is still in the hole or in your plug of dirt They also can help you find the coin among the loose dirt on your ground cloth. Good models sell for about $100.

    Gloves

    • Wearing gloves will protect you from cutting your hands on glass or sharp metal points, and also from getting poison ivy or oak. They also keep your hands clean when digging in the dirt. Invest in a good pair of garden gloves or work gloves before your next metal-detecting trip.
