How to Clean Rusted Die Coins

Cleaning rusted die coins is a hobby many people enjoy. After years of use, coins become dirty, and covered in a coating of grime and muck. Most collectors of rare coins do not clean their coins, as it takes quite a bit off of the value. However, it is fun to clean up dirty coins, and restore them to their mint shine.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the coin by the edges, and run it under a strong stream of cold water. Do not run water on the coin's surface. Simply hold it under the stream of water for 30 to 60 seconds. Use a faucet or hose with a very strong pressure.

    • 2

Soak the coins in a dish of vinegar. This loosens the debris, and helps to fade any tarnish. Soak for 3 to 5 minutes, flipping the coin over a few times during the process. You can also use fresh lemon juice for this soak.

    • 3

Brush the coin with a used toothbrush. Use short brush strokes in one direction repeatedly, until you see the debris and tarnish begin to fade. Turn the coin over, and repeat on the other side. Dip the toothbrush in the vinegar occasionally, while brushing the coin. You can also use a toothpick, or sharp dental tools to pick at tough dirt to knock it loose.

Hold the coin by the edges again, and run it under warm water. Make sure that both sides of the coin are exposed to the water. Remember not to rub the coin's surface during this part of the procedure.

    • 5

Dry the coin. Place it on a soft, lint-free towel or cloth. Turn it over, and lay the other side of the coin face down on the cloth. Do not rub the coin on the cloth, but pat dry instead, and leave it until fully dry.
