When Was the Susan B. Anthony Coin Made?

Before 1979, no woman had ever been honored on a circulating United States coin. That all changed when the Susan B. Anthony $1 coin was issued July 2 of that year. Released in Anthony's hometown of Rochester, New York, nearly 758 million coins were issued in 1979 alone.
  1. Time Frame

    • In addition to the original 1979 coins, circulating coins were also issued in 1980, 1981 and 1999 with a total of of 889 million coins placed in circulation.

    Types

    • Some 9.7 million numismatic Susan B. Anthony coins were minted as part of collector sets.

    Identification

    • From the beginning, there were problems with the coin because it so closely resembled the size and appearance of the ordinary quarter. While a quarter measures 24.26 mm in diameter, the Anthony dollar measured 26.50 mm.

    Size

    • The Susan B. Anthony dollar coin weighs 8.1 grams.

    History

    • The idea behind the release of the Anthony dollar was that a smaller dollar coin might encourage consumers to begin regularly using coins in this denomination again.

    Considerations

    • The coin became so unpopular that a new dollar coin had to be released. In 2000, the Sacajawea dollar replaced the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

    Features

    • The reserve side of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin bears the Apollo 11 insignia.
