How to Pick a Reputable Coin Dealer

Most coin collectors, however dedicated, do not have the time and resources to devote to acquiring coins without a dealer. Having a trusted dealer who can help you find the coins you are looking for and offer them to you for a reasonable price is important. Many beginning coin collectors find themselves feeling a little lost as they navigate coin dealers and brokers. These steps should help you find a reputable dealer who can meet your coin collecting needs.

Instructions

  1. Picking a Reputable Coin Dealer

    • 1

Look for a dealer who is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG). This qualification helps reinforce the dealer's professionalism and dedication to his work. PNG dealers are held to very high standards. If there are no PNG dealers in your area, look for those who are members of the American Numismatic Association (ANA). This group is not as strict as the PNG but still provides a code of ethics. Both organizations provide resources on their websites, found in the resources section of this article.

Select a dealer with a specialty in your type of coins. You may need to call around and ask each dealer some questions about her specialty to determine what she works with most often and which coins she has a true passion for. You will both benefit from a relationship in which you are looking at the same kind of coins.

    • 3

Get references. A good dealer should be able to provide you with a list of satisfied clients that you can speak with. Call these references and inquire about their experiences and level of satisfaction with the dealer.

    • 4

Establish a relationship with your dealer and give him your loyalty. Once you have selected a dealer that you are satisfied with, establish him as your only dealer. Your loyalty will help to make you a preferred client.
