How to Mount an NFL Jersey in a Frame

Sports memorabilia is highly collectible, and displaying your favorite NFL jersey can be accomplished by using a shadow box. Mounting the jersey is rather easy, but you must be careful to not damage it in the process. If you wish to display the back, sides or front of the jersey, you must take that into account when choosing the correct shadow box. Once mounted, display your trophy prominently, remembering to secure it well to prevent it from falling and breaking.

Instructions

    • 1

Order a shadow box that will be large enough for your NFL jersey. Order one online or visit a sports memorabilia store at your local mall or shopping center. Think about what aspects of the jersey you will display and calculate the size you will need. Too much black space or not enough will look sloppy and unprofessional. Remove the black matte board from the frame for mounting.

    • 2

Iron the NFL Jersey so that it looks good in the shadow box. Since you are displaying the item, be meticulous in your ironing efforts. If it is a game-worn jersey, avoid washing it and be very careful with the iron to prevent it from damaging the fabric. Iron in the creases for a crisp, almost-new look for framing.

    • 3

Attach the jersey to the back board of the shadow box. Place it where you want it permanently and attach it to the matte board using stainless steel framing pins. Stainless steel is rust resistant and strong, and will hold the NFL jersey in place for a long time. Place the framing pins in inconspicuous places as well as on seams and other areas where the pins will not be obvious. Place them in specific areas as to not damage the material.

    • 4

Use a needle and thread to sew the jersey to the matte backing. Carefully use a needle and thread to attach the jersey, threading near seams from the neck area around the arms and sides back to the neck area on the other side of the jersey. Use matching thread to avoid seeing it, and carefully sew around the outside of the jersey for maximum support in the shadow box.

    • 5

Place the now-secured jersey and matte back board back into the shadow box and mount. Find a good spot on your wall in your den or office and attach a wire to the back of the shadow box for support. Use a bubble level to make sure that the shadow box is level, and tape measure to ensure that it is centered on the wall if applicable.
