Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the width and height of the poster you wish to frame using a yardstick. Make a note of these measurements.
Place the poster on top of a piece of butcher paper that is at least 12 inches longer and wider than the poster itself. Use this butcher paper to visualize the amount of matting you wish to have around your poster so you can choose a frame of the appropriate size.
Attach the corners of the poster to the butcher paper with small pieces of blue painter̵7;s tape to keep the poster from rolling up while you examine it. Painter̵7;s tape will peel off the poster easily without damaging it.
Step back from the poster and consider the amount of matting you would like to feature within the frame. You might decide that anything over 2 inches of matting distracts from the image on the poster, or you may wish to create a larger piece by adding up to 6 inches of matting.
Measure the distance you have chosen using your yardstick, beginning at each corner of the poster. Mark the distance on the butcher paper with pencil. For example if you opt for 4 inches of matting, make a pencil mark 4 inches above both upper corners of the poster, 4 inches below the lower corners and 4 inches to the side of all 4 corners.
Align your yardstick between two of the marks and use it to draw a straight line. Begin with the height or the width of the poster and repeat for all four sides until you have drawn a rectangle.
Cut out the rectangle and make a note of its measurements. This rectangle represents the size of the piece of matting you will need to place behind your poster as well as the size of the frame. Roll the butcher paper up to protect it.
Bring the roll of butcher paper, as well as your notes on its measurements, with you to a craft store to purchase matting. You will also need to bring the butcher paper and your notes to a frame store, where you can unroll the butcher paper and try it out to ensure it fits in the frame you choose before purchasing it.
