World War II memorabilia is popular with collectors from all over the world. German memorabilia is particularly attractive to some collectors. The uniforms of German soldier from all branches of service, as well as the SS, were regularly decorated with patches indicating rank and position. There were also civilian patches such as for youth groups and political organizations. There is no shortage of sources available to verify these patches. As with any type of collecting, a buyer must be wary of copies and imitations.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit one of the various sites on the Internet specializing in German militaria such as Militaryitems.com, Epicmilitaria.com, Packrat-Toyz.com and Germanmilitari.com. Or, purchase a reference book, such as "Badges &Insignia of the Third Reich, 1933-1945" by Brian Leigh Davis. This information will show you the different types of patches in use at the time.

Identify the patch by its usage, rank or insignia. The German air force (Luftwaffe), navy (Kriegsmarine), army (Heer and Waffen) all used cloth patches with varying insignia. Youth groups, such as Hitler Youth and German RAD, also used cloth arm patches. In addition, the German veterans group also used a recognizable patch featuring a large Maltese cross, with a swastika in the center circle.

    • 3

Compare an actual patch with images of similar patches, either through German militaria catalogs, reference books or World World II militaria dealers. The images, markings and insignia should be the same down to the details.

    • 4

Authenticate the patch. The patch should look like it is from the World War II era. Even the best kept patches should have signs of wear and age. Verify the production technique of the patch. Patches from that era were sewn with cotton thread only. Also, examine the backing and edges of the patch. The edges should look as if they have been cut from a larger piece of fabric.
