Fountain pens are made up of four major parts, the cap, the nib, the barrel and a chamber that holds the ink. This can be either a cartridge, a piston converter or a bladder. If you are using a fountain pen that utilizes a bladder and you are having problems with it, there are a couple of things you can do to try to remedy the situation. If the bladder is broken however, there is nothing you can do except replace it.

Instructions

  1. Refilling the bladder.

    • 1

Remove the barrel to get to the bladder of the fountain pen. If the bladder has stopped working and it is just out of ink, you can easily fix the problem by refilling the bladder.

    • 2

Open a bottle of pen ink and stick the nib of the pen into it.

    • 3

Press the metal bar located on the side of the bladder to release any ink that may be left in the bladder.

    • 4

Release the metal bar to suck ink up into the bladder. Do this slowly if the bladder is completely empty to completely fill the fountain pen.

    • 5

Blot any excess ink from the nib of the pen on a piece of paper before writing or putting on the cap.

    Replacing the Bladder

    • 6

Remove the barrel of the fountain pen and check to see if the bladder is damaged, cracked or leaking.

    • 7

If the bladder is damaged, remove it from the pen by unscrewing it and bringing it into a stationary store that carries fountain pen supplies for a replacement.

    • 8

Insert the new bladder into the fountain pen and begin writing right away to get the ink flowing.
