Obtain the address of the celebrity to which you want to send the request. You can get sports stars' addresses by visiting the official websites for Major League Baseball and the National Football League and sending correspondence through the team. Find the most accurate movie star addresses on subscription sites; Star Archive is one of the most comprehensive.
Write a letter to the celebrity. In your letter, explain why you are a fan of the celebrity, taking time to note some of his career highlights, and what you are seeking. Don't expect to receive a letter in return, but autograph requests are often honored, depending on the popularity and inclination of the celebrity.
Prepare a self-addressed stamped envelope, or SASE. You will rarely get something in return if you do not complete this step, as the celebrity or her assistant will not take the time to address an envelope to you and pay for the postage. Write your address on the recipient line of the envelope, and also include it on the sender line, as a precautionary measure.
Include something to be signed. Often celebrities provide their own photos, but some do not. You can buy 8-by-10 photos from a variety of sources for signatures, or you can enclose an index card or other item, such as a magazine photo or cover, and ask the celebrity to sign it. Search for photos at websites such as Movie Market and Celebrity8x10s.
Fold the SASE in half and put it in an envelope to mail to the celebrity. Include your letter and any items to be signed. If you send an 8-by-10 photo, use a 9-by-12 manila envelope. Mail your package.
Practice patience. Some autograph requests are honored in a week, others in years. It often depends on how much fan mail a celebrity receives and whether your letter gets lost in the shuffle.
