Instructions
Cut the mat board to fit inside the shadow box. To do this, carefully measure the opening of the shadow box, and then use a yardstick to draw your cutting lines on the back of the mat board. Lay the mat board on top of a self-healing cutting surface, and cut the mat board with an X-Acto knife.
Lay the jersey out on the mat and decide how you would like to position it. The number on the jersey is usually the identifying feature. Place the jersey on the mat in a way that the number is prominent. Decide if you want the sleeves to be folded back or be visible.
Pin the jersey to the mat board in preparation for sewing. Make sure your pins don't puncture the mat anywhere that will be visible once the jersey is sewn down.
Sew the jersey to the mat board using a thick needle and thread. Invisible thread works well if you're worried about the thread showing. You can also choose thread that matches the color of the jersey. Use a simple whip stitch at key points. To do a whip stitch, knot the end of the thread once it is threaded on the needle. Poke the needle up from the back side of the mat right through the jersey. Poke the needle back down through the jersey and mat board very close to where your first stitch came up. Don't make this stitch more than 1/4-inch wide. Come back up in the first hole, and go down in the second hole. Make 7 or 8 stitches using the same holes, and then knot the thread on the back of the mat before clipping off the extra thread. Repeat this process at key points, such as at the tops of both shoulder, at the neckline, at the ends of the sleeves and under the arms.
Insert the mat board into the shadow box and secure the back with the hardware that came with the box. If the backing seems precarious, secure it with masking tape.
