How to Write an Authenticity Letter

Many people collect antiques and other collectibles, either simply as a hobby or as a business. Unfortunately, with the rise in popularity of collecting, a number of people have attempted to take advantage of the unwary by selling them fake items, or items that are not exactly what the seller claims. As a consequence, it has become customary for sellers to offer letters of authenticity with items they are selling. These letters should be written by a recognized appraiser. If you are an expert and need to write a letter of authenticity, the process is relatively straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the item and confirm that it is what the seller claims.

    • 2

Name the item in question and briefly describe it.

    • 3

Write a statement at the beginning of the letter stating that you have examined the item in question and based on that examination, you have found it to be authentic.

    • 4

Add a section stating that this letter of authenticity must accompany the item for this sale and any future sales of the item.

    • 5

Add a statement to the effect that this letter was written in good faith, and that neither you nor your organization are responsible for any future misuse of the letter or financial damages that might result.

    • 6

Place your name and contact information at the bottom of the letter.
