History
Philco began making radios in 1926. Within four years, Philco had become the leading producer of radios in the nation. Customers during the "golden age" of radio valued the company's products for their high quality and durability. Many of the company's early radios as well as stereo receivers produced later still function well today.
Landmarks
Philco, the first company to adopt the commercial use of miniature tubes and search-tune radios in 1948, introduced an AM/FM unit with push-button search capabilities in 1966, AM/FM stereo in 1968 and premium sound with matching speakers in 1978. Vintage models routinely sell for hundreds of dollars in today's audiophile marketplace.
Dissolution
The Ford Motor Company bought Philco in 1961. Philco continued to make radios for Ford cars as well as other audio products, but eventually Ford discontinued the brand. Today, the Philco brand is owned and carried by several companies throughout the world.
