Things You'll Need
Instructions
Consult price guides, which list collectibles and their price ranges. General guides list a number of collecting categories in one book. You'll also find more-specific single-topic guides.
Visit shops or antique shows to see how items similar to yours are priced. Establishing a relationship with a dealer may get you a better price when you're ready to sell or buy.
Contact auction houses to obtain a report of the most recent sales. Look for items similar to yours and the price they fetched.
Scour the Internet for antiques and collectibles that are for sale through online auctions or stores.
Search newspapers and other publications devoted to antiquing to find collecting clubs.
Find an experienced mentor who can tell you if you're getting a fair offer. Some of these experts work as pickers (regional buyers) for antique dealers and see a lot of merchandise.
Get a verbal appraisal from a dealer for free. If you have an item you think is really valuable, you might want to contact a professional appraiser, who will charge for that service.
