How to Take Yellow Out of a Vintage Barbie

Some vintage Barbies are in mint condition, while others haven't aged quite so well. A yellowed Barbie may have suffered from prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke, or could just be experiencing the effects of natural aging. If cigarette smoke is the culprit, unfortunately there is no way to get the yellow out of the doll's body. However, there are steps you can take to restore a yellowed Barbie's clothing to put some pep in her step.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Lemon juice
  • Bowl or other container

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the yellowed clothing from the Barbie doll and set them aside.

    • 2

Make a cleaning solution to remove or lessen the effects of yellowing; combine a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and water. Squeeze fresh lemons, or use a presqueezed bottled variety. Place the solution in a bowl or other container large enough for the clothes to soak.

    • 3

Place the yellowed clothing items in the bowl with the solution and allow them to soak for several minutes.

    • 4

Rinse the clothing thoroughly under cold water.

    • 5

Place the clothing in a salad spinner to remove excess water.

    • 6

Hang white clothing items out to dry in the sun on doll clothes hangers. Dry all other clothes indoors and away from direct sunlight on doll clothes hangers.

    • 7

      Repeat the process as needed.
