How to Identify a Loose Action Figure

Action figure collecting is a hobby for the young and old alike. Children may collect toys so they can have adventures with all of the characters, while adults may collect out of nostalgia for their childhoods, or to resell. Occasionally, you may discover a loose action figure without any packaging. Thanks to the Internet, collectors who would like to identify loose action figures have more resources at their disposal.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the figure for identifying marks and brand names, and put the information into a search engine. Action figures will often have the maker's copyright stamped somewhere on the body, usually in an out of the way place, such as the back or bottom of the foot. Even something cryptic, such as a number may be useful when paired with a description of the figure.

    • 2

Ask for help in a forum or newsgroup. There are many sites devoted to collecting action figures, and a polite post may yield some answers. Be sure to take a clear picture of the figure and answer any questions.

    • 3

Check online databases, like the DASH Catalog (see Resources). These databases will often allow you to sort by series, type or year. Narrow down your search until you find some plausible options.

    • 4

Bring your figure to a local comic book or gaming shop. Many of the people who own and frequent these places are familiar with a wide range of characters and series, or may know someone who can help. Be sure to ask people in different age ranges, as the character may be from a recent series or from an old show.
