How to Get Mildew Smell Out of Barbie Dolls

If you collect Barbie dolls, you likely want to keep them in prime condition. However, if they've been stored outside or in a damp area or you picked up some from a garage sale, they might have an unpleasant mildew odor that could indicate water damage or could lower their overall value. Thankfully, there is a way to get rid of the mildew smell without damaging the Barbie dolls any further.

Instructions

    • 1

Set out your large glass mixing bowl and fill a little over halfway with three parts white vinegar to one part water.

    • 2

Remove the clothing and head from the Barbie doll. Place the body, head and clothing in the white vinegar solution.

    • 3

Wipe the plastic body and face with a rag. Brush the cleaning solution through the Barbie's hair with an old toothbrush. Scrub the clothing pieces with the toothbrush. Allow all pieces soak for an hour in the cleaning solution.

    • 4

Remove the body, head and clothing from the cleaning solution and rinse with clean, cool water. Repeat Step 2 until the mildew smell is completely gone.

    • 5

Finish cleaning with soapy, warm water and dry the Barbie completely. Store in a dry, well-lit room or container.
