How to Identify Vintage Dolls

Collecting vintage dolls is a way to own a piece of history. Dolls' clothing and hairstyles recall the fashion and beauty trends of the time in which they were made. As you collect, you may have found some interesting dolls but know little about their origin, date of manufacture, or name. Identifying your vintage doll may take some effort, but with a little work and a bit of luck, it can be done.

  Determine the material the doll is made of. Note the type of material used for the doll's body. The material can help you identify the period in which your doll was made. For example, dolls were not made of hard plastic or vinyl before 1949.

  Find markings. Manufacturers will often imprint their dolls with a number or symbol that identifies them as the manufacturer. The mark can be the company's name spelled out, numbers or a symbol. Typically, this mark will be located on the back of the doll's neck or on the bottom of the foot. After you find the mark, research its origin. You can search for the symbol online or use a doll collector's reference book.

  Research the manufacturer. Once you know the approximate age and manufacturer of your doll, research the dolls the company made during that time. Compare pictures and descriptions of the dolls.

  Consult a professional. If you are not able to identify the doll on your own, take it to an antiques dealer who is familiar with vintage dolls and ask them for help. A professional who assesses your doll may charge a fee or may be willing to look at the doll as a courtesy.
